This position serves as a resource for CHA members, including theologians, ethicists and executives within the ministry, as well as for CHA staff and other individuals and groups with whom we have shared interests.  Responsibilities include critical thinking, consultation, and writing about theological and ethical issues in Catholic health care, program and resource development, consultations and presentations, participation in department programs and planning.   Travel is required (approximately 30%).

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of CHA's strategic plan in areas related to theology, ethics, formation and church relations;
  • Consult and collaborate with CHA advocacy department on ethics related strategies and policy issues;
  • Develop and provide written, in-person and electronic programs and materials on clinical and organizational ethical issues for members;
  • In consultation with member ethicists, develop and maintain professional standards for ethicists, mission leaders who have a significant role in ethics, and ethics committees;
  • Assist in promoting Church relations between the ministry and individual Bishops as well as the USCCB;
  • Identify emerging issues that need scholarly assessment;
  • Promote on-going dialogue and initiate consultations and task forces among theologians and ethicists working in Catholic health ministry, especially on emerging issues that affect the entire ministry; 
  • Provide consultation services and research to members as requested;
  • Serve as editor of HCEUSA, jointly published by CHA and St. Louis University Center for Health Care Ethics and write regular column for each issue.
  • Write regular column for Health Progress and other special articles as requested.
  • Participate in member educational programs as a presenter/speaker
  • Help CHA staff assess all services/products so that they reflect commitment to Catholic theological, moral, and social tradition
  • Contribute regularly to scholarly publications and conferences outside of CHA
  • Participate in CHA programs, activities, and internal sessions, including those programs that CHA jointly sponsors with other organizations


At least 5 years' experience as an employee or consultant in Catholic health care ministry with demonstrated expertise in clinical and organizational ethics.  Experience and ability to understand and work collaboratively with Church and health care leaders.

Skills, Knowledge and Ability:
Thorough knowledge of Catholic theology, particularly Catholic moral theology and health care ethics.  Demonstrated achievement in writing both academic/technical materials as well as more popular pieces.  Strong teaching and presentation skills.  Ability to oversee, organize, and complete multiple projects.  Flexibility and adaptation to the rigors of travel.  Ability to work as a member of an interdisciplinary team.  Familiar with ethical perspectives of other religious traditions.  Practicing Catholic with demonstrated understanding of Church structures, practices (rituals and traditions), moral and social teaching.   Thorough knowledge of the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services and their implications for the delivery of services in the changing health care environment.  Intermediate Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook skills.

Ph.D. in Catholic health care ethics or moral theology; or a Ph.D. in health care ethics with at least a master's degree or equivalent in Catholic theology.
